THe road: Text Rendering
“Did you have any friends?
Yes. I did.
Lots of them?
Yes.
Do you remember them?
Yes. I remember them.
What happened to them?
They died.
All of them?
Yes. All of them.
Do you miss them.
Yes. I do.
Where are we going?
We’re going south.
Okay. “(59)
I believe that this particular section was isolated because it shows the boy and the man’s relationship. Their relationship is very dry verbally
and publically, but I think emotionally they are very close and that they just don’t want to show too much in case they lose each other. The
sentence I choose is “They died.” This sentence is very short but it has a lot of meaning. The man’s friends died, we aren’t told how but we
know that they did and how dryly he says it, they probably died very tragically like all the others did in this apocalyptic world. Although this
technically is a sentence I think that it is able to be applied as a phrase because of its simplicity. “Where are we going?” Again I think that there
is undercover meaning to it. I thinks maybe the author was coming through and asking where any of us are going in a place where we can
never tell what’s ahead of us. The single word I chose is “Okay.” because they always agree. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to last that
long in a postapocalyptic world and that the only way to survive in a world like that is to agree with the person who is the only reason you’re
surviving. This segment of the text shows a little bit of the man’s past and of the future of the characters. The future is very unclear but the
hope for the future is very strong in the last portion of this segment unlike some other parts of the text. I think the man tries to think as little
about the past as possible but doesn’t care to give little hints.
